JOB SUMMARY:

The Desktop Publisher oversees the layout and design of district publications (i.e. community calendar, monthly newsletter, brochures, flyers, etc.) and prepares them for the printing process.  This individual will also assist the Supervisor in duplicating material on various types of equipment and performing related tasks.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:      Additional duties may be assigned.

  • Effectively utilizes district technologies appropriate to position and assumes responsibility for attending district training needed to successfully perform designated responsibilities as directed by supervisor.
  • Working knowledge of desktop publishing and typesetting.
  • Directly communicates with district administrators and staff concerning specific publications (i.e. calendar, newsletter, etc.).
  • Operates production level print and copy equipment. Also operates assorted bindery equipment such as padding machine, paper drill, paper cutter, shrink wrapping machine, manual padding press and laminating machine.
  • Assists teachers in the layout and design of school newsletters, flyers, posters, etc.
  • Maintains inventory of all print shop forms and supplies.
  • Provide a detailed report of all schools’ and departments’ print shop charges.
  • Provides assistance to district employees (i.e. secretaries, teachers, etc.) concerning printing and supply orders.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma required. College degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of computers and such software as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Fiery Digital Print Server, Microsoft Office 365.
  • At least two (2) years prior successful experience operating digital copiers and other equipment likely found in a modern print shop.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to successfully perform desktop publishing and typesetting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with district administrators, staff and general public.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, etc.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

  • Ability to solve practical problems.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Must have prior experience in art and design and possess creative ability and innovative ideas.
  • Must be detail oriented, organized and able to manage multiple tasks and projects.
  • Must be mechanically inclined, skilled in the operation and maintenance of printing and other equipment as listed.
  • Must have experience or an aptitude for learning the operation of all digital copiers and other related duplicating equipment.
  • Must exemplify color vision acuity.
  • Must possess dexterity in using hand tools and handle exposure to noise and fumes.
  • Must work well with others, follow written and oral directions and complete assignments given.
  • Should have good general health and be free of any physical impairment that would hinder completing assigned duties, as job involves standing and lifting most of the time.
  • Should be able to work effectively and cooperatively with others and follow oral instructions given by administrators, supervisors and other district employees.
  • Must perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and School Board Policies.
  • Should be solution oriented.

 

EQUIPMENT/TOOLS UTILIZED:

  • Computer (Microsoft Windows), and desktop publishing software such Adobe Create Cloud Suite and Microsoft Office 365.
  • Production level print and copy equipment
  • Bindery equipment such as paper cutter, paper folder, saddle stitcher, shrink wrapping machine, 3-hole puncher, standard collator, spiral and tape binding machines and laminating machine.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand and talk or hear and sometimes walk and sit, and is exposed to noise and fumes.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs. (i.e. boxes, supplies, equipment, etc.).  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision so as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus.  The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several departments and interact with the public and other staff.
